A Glance at Our Week

LITERACY- This week, we continued our research on Emperor Penguins. We read different non fiction books about Emperor Penguins. We also read Tacky the Penguin and  Tacky in Trouble.  This was a great connection to our penguin unit. Students were able to see how author's use real animals and real places to make up stories. Students were able to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution as well as identify words to describe Tacky the Penguin.

FUNDATIONS- We continued Unit 8: blend sounds: br, gr, bl, st, sp and many more.  We practiced tapping words, making words with magnets and writing words. We also learned the trick words: over, her, and number. Please continue to have your child practice letter formation.

MATH- This week we continued Module 2 topic B: counting on or taking from ten to solve results unknown and total unknown. Students practiced subtracting 7, 8, and 9 from teen numbers using all three strategies: draw the picture and circle 10, count on and take ten using a number bond. We will be starting topic C next week.

SCIENCE/ SOCIAL STUDIES- We finished our research on Emperor Penguins. We researched about their prey, predators, and offspring. We also learned to write a conclusion for our non-fiction book.

Reading Bags Homework

Your child's reading bag will contain familiar books that we have gone over in class. These books are for your child to be able to read independently. Some books may be easy, but are meant for your child to practice expression and fluency as well as build confidence. Please know that all books do not have to be read every day. Please continue to remind your child to bring book bags every day.

After reading the book, ask your child comprehension questions about the story.

  • Who are the main characters?

  • What happened in the beginning, middle and the end?

  • What connections can you make with the story?

  • What does the story remind you of?reading

Homework should not exceed more than 30 minutes a might. Our purpose is to build responsibility and practice skills.

Eureka Math has many ways for students to practice.

Sprint/ Fluency Builders: We practice our fluency with timed (usually one minute unless directions state differently) tests. At the end of the test, the students circle the number they got to and then correct our work with a different color. If you wish to practice at home, here are sprints and fluency builders for all modules.

Problem Sets: Students practice in class. Teacher is there for support and then we go over it together. Students explain their thinking and correct when needed.

Exit Tickets: Students complete exit tickets on their own and turn in to teacher. They are used to inform instruction and are not sent home.

Homework: Students should be able to complete at home on their own. They made need some help understanding what is expected or help reading the math stories. We found some  resources where you can watch videos on how to complete the lesson.
