Discovery Application for 2022-23 Opens End of September

The Douglas County School District Discovery Program is designed to meet the needs of gifted elementary school students (2nd to 6th grade) who require intensity of instruction and acceleration beyond what can reasonably be expected from the regular school programming. For more information about the Discovery Program please go HERE.

What We've Been Up To:

• K/1st Grade:We have been busy doing some assessments to determine what we are ready to learn in Math and Literacy.  We will begin meeting after Fall break for enrichment activities.  We will begin with a study of sound, since the Sound Garden is now outside and ready to use.

•2nd Grade: We are working in our  Math Detectives packets and completing a Math Problem of the Week each week together.

•3rd Graders: In Math we are working on higher level multiplication problems.  If you child doesn't have their math facts memorized, practicing them at home could be a fun family activity! In Reading we have been working on growing our brains with critical thinking through analogies and If Then statements.  Next, we will begin our student of Native American beliefs around spirit animals and use the 3D printer to create our out totem poles made with our spirit animals.

4th  Graders: 4th Graders are coming to the Math Lab 2-3 times a week to work on individualized math activities.  Our focus is on place value and computation right now. We have moved the Sound Garden outside to the Outdoor Learning Space.  We made instructional posters and created a fun commercial using the green screen.

5th Graders are coming to the Math Lab 2-3 times a week to work on individualized math activities.    In Reading we are using our nonfiction reading skills to learn about modern day explorers.  We are wrapping up our work on programming our Dash and Dot robots to complete the challenge courses we have built for them.

•6th Graders: In Math students are working on either 6th Grade level enrichment activities or 7th Grade integers and rational numbers.  We are trying to stay positive!  (see what I did there?)  In Literacy we have been reading nonfiction articles about the different types of immigration, and what it looks like in places all around the world.
